One of my guilty pleasures is discovering new books and reading about them. I spend hours selecting my next book.
Choosing books is underrated. It’s a commitment of hours of deep work after all.
Till now, I was operating with a sunk-cost fallacy to read the book as I’ve spent a lot of time already. Now, I’m passing that onus onto the author to keep me engaged and articulate their thoughts well for me. I should look forward to picking up the book again. It should not feel like a chore.
Most books are not written for me and that’s okay.
And so, I’m letting go of the initial goal of X books (redacted) I had in mind for next year. A book has to be read at the right time. I’d rather find the ones that are super relevant for me right now than keep reading the ones that feel skippable.
You need goals to define a general direction that you want to move in. You need goals to push yourself out of your comfort zone. You need goals to measure your progress. You need goals to start. I’m at a point where I already love reading so don’t need a big goal of X books. Fingers crossed.
P.S. This is my 42nd post since I consciously made a decision to write more. I asked myself what will I write about if this was my last post. And the topic came instantly to me.
