It's Not on You

Posted on:Sep 15, 2022

One of my key takeaways while learning design was:

“If you can’t figure out how to use a device, it’s not on you. It wasn’t designed right.”

Some extensions:

  1. If you didn’t understand something from a book or a video, it’s not on you. The other person did not articulate their thoughts well.

  2. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by an assignment, it’s not on you. It wasn’t designed right.

  3. If you’re not interested in an ongoing conversation around you, it’s not on you. You shouldn’t force yourself to like a topic.

To summarize, don’t be hard on yourself. It’s not your fault! One size doesn’t fit all.
